Trading for Gold

If I were a rich man. Tevye's complaint in Fiddler on the roof applies to most Grepolis players. Life would be so much easier if there was gold to spend. But the credit card just shakes its head when you try to buy it from Grepolis. Time to hit the gold market in one or more of the Grepolis worlds. The old system of each player on his own has been replaced by a central ocean exchange. London, eat your heart out; the real trades are all happening here.

If you want or need gold in one world, then go into another world and earn some. It's so dead easy it's astonishing Grepolis came up with the solution of the central ocean gold exchange. It's not only simple, it's also elegant. It's simple to use for players, too. Whoever said free market was best, that system went out of the window as impractical.

You are playing in a world and would like to get your hands on some gold to make life easier for you. To access the uncounted riches of the gold market join the Klondike gold rush. Choose a new world to play in beside the one you are already playing. Remember at all times that this new world is gold only. I'm giving you good advice; I have to remind myself when I start loosing a or even THE city in the gold world. Just restart. It's the gold, the gold; ask Scrooge McDuck.

This is what you do step by step to get your hands on gold:

Step 1. Enter a new world, found your city, follow the advisers to build the city up. Following the advisers is a fast way to build the city and you earn some gold for completing their quests.

Step 2. Get the priorities right. Timber Camp, Quarry, Silver Mine, and Andromeda all going for maximal level. Warehouse must be going to maximal level, too, to get all the goodies stored. Market is going to maximal level to move the stuff around. Defense with maximal level Walls and Tower plus Thermal Bath and loads and loads of defensive land units and biremes. Some Harpies to go shopping for resources, too. Don't forget the farming villages to get additional stuff.

Step3: Go to the market in your city view. The window pops open on the buyers gold exchange, be very aware of that. Check if there is a gap between the exchange storage amount (on the left) and the goal storage amount (on the right). In the top picture all three resources of wood, stone and silver show low storage amounts. It's a sellers dream.

Step 4: Change to the Sell resources tab. Enter the maximum amount of one resource you are able to sell and click the Find best rates button. A Review order window will pop up showing the proposed deal and a Confirm order button. Before you hit the button, check that it says Sell beside the resource icon. If it says Buy, you're in the wrong tab. Please note that the exchange has to be done one resource at a time as the system is set to keep them apart.

Step 5: After you hit the Confirm order button, the traders start walking. It works like an all resource trade. The merchants start walking, one with resources from your city, the other with gold from the exchange. The traveling time is set for every world differently, but is the same for every city in a world. The gold is only available to you once the merchant from the exchange hits your city. But it is available in all worlds you play.

Step 6: Repeat for the next resource.

You can increase your chance of trading with the gold exchange by having cities in different parts of the world. The exchange is done ocean by ocean, every ocean you add to your collection therefore increases your trading possibilities.

You might wonder why Grepolis is running this exchange. After all, the invention and the programming cost real money. But the old system of gold trading between players didn't work on several levels.

In the old system, Grepolis had imposed certain rules and a minimum trade amount. In came the clever chaps that offered the minimum trade amount plus a bonus delivered separately. Price control went out the window at that point. Plus, trading player to player, Grepolis only earned when that gold was finally spent on offers from Grepolis; if it was spent on gold trades between players in another world, then Grepolis saw no money at all.

With the gold market exchange system, all these problems are done with. The exchange controls the prices. there are no more private under the table deals. And with the usual trading habits of buying low and selling high, the exchange actually takes gold out of the system. Money earned, if in a roundabout way.
