Ranking the Best Defending Land Units for Effectiveness Against Blunt Weapons

In Grepolis, each unit has only one way or rather one weapon type to attack with (exceptions can be found in the list of sea units in my post about attacking units). They all (or at least most of them) have some defense points against attackers. I'm going to give rankings for all land units against blunt, sharp, and distance weapons starting off with blunt weapons attackers in this post. Please note that this post includes the new unit Satyr from Beta.

The defense power is shown as a number calculated per population used for any unit (i.e. if one chariot uses 4 population, its defense power as shown in Grepolis wiki has been divided by 4). The lists below show the ranking for defense in your own city or in a city on the same island, and the same for cities on other islands using slow and fast transport ships.

Ranking the best defending units against blunt weapons at home or on the same island as your home city:
38 Pegasus*
35 Calydonian Boar#
28 Cerberus#
27 Medusa#
26 Cyclops#
25 Minotaur#
19 Chariot
18 Hoplite
16 Centaur#
14 Sword
13 Divine Envoy#
08 Griffin*
08 Erinys#
08 Harpy*
07 Slinger
07 Archer
06 Horse
04 Manticore*
03 Satyr#
02 Catapult

Ranking the best defending units against blunt weapons supporting a city on another island using slow transport:
38 Pegasus*
29 Calydonian Boar#
23 Cerberus#
22 Medusa#
22 Cyclops#
21 Minotaur#
16 Chariot
15 Hoplite
13 Centaur#
11 Sword
11 Divine Envoy#
08 Griffin*
08 Harpy*
07 Erinys#
06 Slinger
06 Archer
05 Horse
03 Manticore*
03 Satyr#
02 Catapult

Ranking the best defending units against blunt weapons supporting a city on another island using fast transport:
38 Pegasus*
27 Calydonian Boar#
21 Cerberus#
20 Medusa#
20 Cyclops#
19 Minotaur#
14 Chariot
14 Hoplite
12 Centaur#
11 Sword
10 Divine Envoy#
08 Griffin*
08 Harpy*
06 Erinys#
05 Slinger
05 Archer
05 Horse
03 Manticore*
03 Satyr#
02 Catapult

There are some things I have to point out that are important and not necessarily obvious. Any unit showing a defense value of less than 10 points against blunt weapons should not be used in defense. If you know a blunt attack is going to hit you, evacuate them.

The lists show only the effectiveness against attacking units using blunt weapons. The picture changes drastically for units good in defending against sharp or distance weapons. A city needs a good mix of the three to keep it safe while you're off doing whatever you do in real life.

The lists also don't give any indication as to cost per unit. That is also something to look at.

There is some good news, though. If you station your land units and transports in another city, all transport ships are safe from loss through sea attacks as long as a single land unit is still alive. To be safe though, you should recall empty transports after loosing land units in an attack.

Flying units don't need transport ships to reach another island have been marked with an asterisk (*). Most of them are perfect for attacking, except the Pegasus which is a defensive unit. In defense, you station units in another city. Mythical units can only be stationed in a city that worships the god they belong to. The mythical units that can't fly are marked with a hash (#) in the lists.
