Grepolis allows only one one weapon type per unit to attack with for each of the land and sea units (the exceptions are to be found in the list of sea units in my post about attacking units). All land units and most sea units have at least one defense point per unit against any kind of attacker. I am showing rankings for all land units against blunt, sharp, and distance weapons. In this post I'm ranking the effectiveness against distance weapons. Please note that this post includes the new unit Satyr from Beta.
The Grepolis wiki shows the defense power per unit. For my ranking, I have calculated the numbers as per population used for any unit (i.e. if one catapult uses 15 population, the defense power is now shown as divided by 15). The ranking lists below show the defense worth of all land units in your own city or in any city on the same island. The same ranking is drawn up for cities on other islands that make the use of slow or fast transport ships inevitable.
Ranking the best defending units against distance weapons at home or on the same island as your home city:

It is important to point out some things that are not necessarily obvious. Any unit showing a defense value per population of less than 10 should not be used in the defense against distance weapons. If you know or strongly suspect that a distance weapons attack is on the way to your city, send them out.
The above comparison lists only show the effectiveness of the defense against attacking units using distance weapons. The lists look completely different for units defending against blunt or sharp weapons. Cities need a good mix of the three types of defense units to keep them safe. The cost per unit isn't shown either something that comes to mind when you are starved for resources.
On a positive, if you have stationed your land units
and transports in another city, all transport ships are kept safe from sinking as long as a single land unit is still alive. To be safe though,
you should recall empty transports after loosing land units in an attack, or more attacks might wipe them out when the last man falls.
Units marked with an asterisk (*) are flying units that don't need transport ships to travel to another island. Most mythicals are perfect attacking units. The exception is the Pegasus which is used in defense. When supporting a city, your units stay there. Mythical units can only stay in a city that worships the same god as the city the mythicals come from. Mythical units that can't fly and need transport are marked with a hash (#) in the lists.
