Ranking the Best Defending Land Units for Effectiveness Against Sharp Weapons

Grepolis offers only one way or rather one weapon type to attack with for each land and sea unit (the exceptions are to be found in the list of sea units in my post about attacking units). All land units and most sea units have at least some defense points against any kind of attacker. I have drawn up rankings for all land units against blunt, sharp, and distance weapons. In this post I'm dealing with sharp weapons. Please note that this post contains the new unit Satyr from Beta.

The power to defend is shown as a number calculated per population used for any unit (i.e. if one divine envoy uses 3 population, its defensive power as shown in the Grepolis wiki has been divided by 3). The three lists below show the defense ranking of all land units in your own city or in any city on the same island, and the same for cities on other islands using slow or fast transport ships.

Ranking the best defending units against sharp weapons at home or on the same island as your home city:
49 Centaur#
35 Calydonian boar#
25 Archer
19 Medusa#
14 Pegasus*
13 Divine envoy#
12 Hoplite
11 Minotaur#
10 Cerberus#
09 Griffin*
08 Erinys#
08 Slinger
08 Sword
07 Satyr#
05 Harpy*
05 Manticore*
04 Chariot
02 Catapult
00 Horse
00 Cyclops#

Ranking the best defending units against sharp weapons supporting a city on another island using slow transport:
40 Centaur#
29 Calydonian boar#
21 Archer
16 Medusa#
14 Pegasus*
11 Divine envoy#
10 Hoplite
09 Minotaur#
09 Griffin*
08 Cerberus#
07 Erinys#
07 Slinger
07 Sword
05 Harpy*
05 Manticore*
05 Satyr#
03 Chariot
02 Catapult
00 Horse
00 Cyclops#

Ranking the best defending units against sharp weapons supporting a city on another island using fast transport:
37 Centaur#
27 Calydonian boar#
20 Archer
15 Medusa#
14 Pegasus*
10 Divine envoy#
09 Hoplite
09 Griffin*
08 Minotaur#
07 Cerberus#
06 Erinys#
06 Slinger
06 Sword
05 Harpy*
05 Manticore*
05 Satyr#
03 Chariot
02 Catapult
00 Horse
00 Cyclops#

Some things that are important to point out and not necessarily obvious need pointing out. For one, any unit showing a defense value of less than 10 should not be used in defense against sharp weapons. If you know a sharp weapons attack is coming your way, get them out of the city.

The lists above compare only the effectiveness of the defense against attacking units using sharp weapons. The picture is completely different for units good in defending against blunt or distance weapons. Cities need a good mix of the three defense units to keep them safe. The lists also don't compare the cost per unit. That is something that you need to keep in mind.

There is some good news, though. If you station your land units and transports in another city, all transport ships are safe from loss through sea attacks as long as a single land unit is still alive. To be safe though, you should recall empty transports after loosing land units in an attack.

Flying units don't need transport ships to reach another island, they have been marked with an asterisk (*). Most mythicals are perfect for attacking, except for the Pegasus which is a defensive unit. When defending a city, you station units there to stay. Mythical units can only be stationed in a city that worships the same god as the city the mythicals come from. The mythical units that can't fly are marked with a hash (#) in the lists.
